Well, it's been just over two weeks since we ditched the diapers and we are are still going strong. I am really proud of the progress Ruby made right out of the gates. Learning to go pee-pee on the potty was a total cinch but we are still struggling with some fear when it comes to going "number two." Please tell me that one day it just "clicks"!?!?!
I've heard some potty training horror stories so I think I got fairly lucky with Ruby. However even with being a good "student" I still think that potty training is NO JOKE. Quite a commitment and frankly diapers are so much easier in many ways. But, I knew it was time.... The first two days were literally spent side by side with Ruby. I had to keep a very close eye on her since the method of potty training I was trying to follow suggested scooping her up mid accident and running to the potty. So yea, it's been QUITE the bonding experience. My patience was tried numerous times and I went to sleep exhausted those first couple nights. And who am I kidding - we are not out of the woods yet.....
The good news:
- I don't have to ask Ruby "do you need to go potty?" she tells me when she needs to go.
- Ruby hasn't had a "pee-pee" accident since day 2. Yep, two weeks straight of peeing in the potty. WOO-HOO! We've been doing lots of cheering and clapping around here....
- We have completely ditched diapers - that also means no more diaper pail in Ruby's room or changing pad on the dresser. Hey, it's the little things.
- Ruby has been waking up dry from her nap just about everyday. She also wakes up dry in the morning about 50-75% of the time.
- Beginning on day 4 we started to run errands, have play dates, and visit family's houses all without out an accident. I still never leave home without an extra pair of undies and clothes!
- We have had some drama free poops on the potty. More on this under "bad news"
Ok, now for the bad news:
- Ruby is scared to go poop on the potty. Yep. I am afraid this will never end. Of course I KNOW she'll get over it but I wish it weren't an issue....
- Our first successful poop on the potty came on day 4 however since then it's been a combo of either 1. requesting her "boppy and night night" (mommy's fault) and then going poop without much drama. Believe it or not this is the best of the options 2. waiting until I put her down for her nap in a Pull Up and then going in the pull up or 3. TOTAL drama for about an hour before she finally goes in the potty. When I say drama I mean darting around the house, whining, numerous trips to the potty only to sit on it and then immediately hop off saying "Nope- Nope- Nope!" She KNOWS she needs to go but she doesn't want to. It eventually happens and we ALL feel better!
Anyways - I am trying to focus on the positive and of course praise the heck out of any and all success Ruby has in the bathroom. Let me repeat, it's been quite an experience. Here are some pictures so you can feel like you were there too because I know you wish you were...... :-)
Day # 1 - We started the day by putting on Elmo "big girl undies" and then throwing away the diapers. The goal - keep Elmo dry!
Ruby's special treats. These were important at first but really Ruby responded more to the heavy praise and celebrating than she did to receiving treats.
We did lots of brainwashing, I mean reading. :-)
Day two I texted Chris and I think he sensed my stress level.
That night he came home with treats for both of his girls.
Seeing Ruby cruise around the house in her big girl undies and heels was hilarious.
Lots and lots of liquids. Numerous sippy cups were going at all times.
To pass the time in between trips to the potty we spent a lot of time outside.
Ugh. In either a weak or genius mommy moment (this has yet to be determined) I offered Ruby her boppy to comfort her distress in going #2 on the potty. It worked....for now.
To celebrate Ruby's 1st poo-poo in the potty she was given her princess baby who she has proudly been strolling around the house ever since.
If you ask Ruby about her baby she'll tell you in her best heebie-jeebie that she got the baby for "PoopooonthepottyYAY"
Why do kids always have to pee right after you've packed them into the car? Here we are in our first day out with a successful trip to the potty in the back of the suburban. Classic!
Here's to the next adventure.....

LOL I'm sorry to laugh at you but, if its ANY comfort, Ruby is doing NO different than MANY Potty Training :) she'll catch on to the " # 2" aka poopy in the potty , its a developmental thing I swear , just keep on doing what your doing and she'll continue to do like a Champ ! Sounds like she is doing a GREAT job and keep up that Encouragement, the pay off FAR out weighs the few weeks it takes to train her !!
Dear Jaime,
One day, it just clicks. No kidding.
Just keep encouraging her. Maybe develop a little ritual to say goodbye to the poop when it finally hits the target. Rituals can be quite comforting. I have read that kids have some idea that they are losing a part of themselves, so reassurance that she does not need this particular item can be a big help. You know, stickers by the handle on the toilet, charts for checking off. Practice throwing away other things as well. You get the idea.
The encouragement and congratulations are your biggest asset. You are such a good mom and it looks as if Ruby just wants to please you. You are doing so well. It truly is just a matter of time. She's not even two yet. This is quite the accomplishment. Please tell her that her friend, Judy, is very proud of her new big girl skills. I hope to see you all soon.
Keep up the good work.
